When Square acquired Weebly in 2018, active development largely stopped. User reviews on G2, Trustpilot, and Reddit consistently describe the product as feeling 'frozen in time' — new features are rare, bug fixes are slow, and the roadmap is opaque. The web has moved on; Weebly largely hasn't.
Weebly's AI features are limited to basic text suggestions within a traditional drag-and-drop editor. There is no AI site generation from a business description, no AI-powered design system, and no conversational editing. Compared to modern AI builders, the gap is significant.
Square's acquisition means Weebly increasingly pushes you toward Square Payments and Square POS integrations. If you already use Square, that can be useful. If you don't, the constant nudges toward their ecosystem add friction to a product that should just help you build a website.
Weebly's templates and default styling haven't kept pace with modern design standards. Sites built on Weebly tend to look like they were made in 2015 — functional, but not the kind of professional impression that wins customers in a competitive market.
